The Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Tarun Gogoi today met the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T. R. Baalu in connection with the implementation of Special Accelerated Road Development Programme in North-Eastern Region (SARDP-NE).
Shri Gogoi requested that the developmental works in Assam included in the SARDP-NE may be allowed to be executed by the State Government, and not by Border Roads Organisation and National Highways Authority of India, as proposed in SARDP-NE. Shri Gogoi said that otherwise, a large number of technical and non-technical staff of Assam Government would be rendered surplus.
The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T R Baalu agreed to reconsider the matter.
SARDP-NE envisages improvement of 3251 km of National Highways and 4388 km of other roads at an estimated cost of RS. 12,123 crore. Out of these, a length of 851 km of National Highways and 199 km of other roads fall in Assam.
