ccea approves continuance of the nvbdcp

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) at its meeting held here today, approved the continuance of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) for effective prevention and control of Malaria, Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis and elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis and Kala-azar in India as envisaged in the National Health Policy (2002) and in the goal of “Healthy Family, Healthy Village, Health Nation” envisioned under the National Rural Health Mission launched by the Government of India in April, 2005.

The CCEA also approved and cleared implementation of Intensified Malaria Control Project with grant funds from the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), Geneva. This project aims to improve access to quality services for control of Malaria in 94 districts of the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram Nagaland, Tripura, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal. The project would benefit 100 million population in these States in predominantly rural, tribal and disadvantaged areas. The project strategies include:-

(a) Access to appropriate anti-malaria drugs;

(b) Use of rapid diagnostic kits to facilitate early diagnosis;

(c) Artesunate combination drug therapy in drug resistant malaria cases;

(d) Integrated vector control suited to local needs with focus on up scaling use of insecticide treated mosquito nets;

(e) Public-private partnership including involvement of Armed and Paramilitary forces, mobilization of Non-Governmental Organisations/Faith based organizations/Community based organizations/Self-Help Groups/Local Self-Government (Panchayati Raj Institutions etc.); and

(f) Community empowerment and participation.
