The Committee set up to review the provisions of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 submitted its report here today to the Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil. Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Committee, former Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Jeevan Reddy said that the report was prepared after extensive discussions with various sections of the society. He said that it was a unanimous report. The Home Minister thanked the Committee for preparing the report. He said that it would first be put up to the Cabinet and its contents would be carefully considered. The report would be published along with the decision of the Cabinet with the approval of the Government.
The decision to set up the Committee was taken following demands made by the general public and civil groups. Apart from Justice Jeevan Reddy, the Committee included former Vice-Chancellor and jurist, Dr. S.B. Nakade; former Special Secretary, MHA, Shri P.P. Srivastav; former DGMO, Lt. Gen. (Retd.)V.R. Raghavan and journalist Sanjoy Hazarika. The Committee was constituted in November last year.
