All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 witnessed a decrease by 2 points during May 2005 and stood at 527 (five hundred twenty seven) mainly due to decrease in the prices of Wheat, Wheat Atta, Onion, Chillies Dry, Kerosene Oil etc. The point to point rate of inflation, based on CPI-IW has decreased from 4.96% in April 2005 to 3.74% in May 2005. In May 2004, it was 2.83 %.

The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. As compared to the previous month, during the month, in 28 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 30 points; in 4 centres it remained stationary while in remaining 38 centres it recorded an increase of 1 point each in Rangapara-Tezpur, Raniganj, Chennai, Alwaye, Ahmedabad, Bhillai, Noamundi and Nagpur to 20 points in Warangal centre.

The decrease of 30 points in Mumbai centre was due to decrease in prices of Rice, Wheat, Tea Leaf, Kerosene Oil, Saree etc. On the other hand, Warangal centre experienced the maximum increase of 20 points mainly on account of rise in the prices of Rice, Wheat, Goat Meat, Milk, Vegetable and Fruit items and rise in Cinema Charges etc.

The index in respect of six main centres were as follows:-

1. Ahemdabad 510 4. Chennai 565

2. Bangalore 527 5. Delhi 640

3. Kolkata 572 6. Mumbai 589
