The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased by two points and one point respectively during May 2005. The index for Agricultural Labourers rose to 343 points and for Rural Labourers to 245 points.
In case of Agricultural Labourers 12 states reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 5 points while 6 States showed a decrease ranging between 1 to 2 points. In two states the index remained constant.
In case of Rural Labourers 11 states reflected an increase in indices ranging between 1 to 4 points while three states showed a decrease ranging between 1 to 2 points. The index remained constant in six states.
Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and West Bengal experienced sharpest increase of 3 points each for Agricultural Labourers mainly due to increase in prices of Rice, Jawar, Arhar Dal, Milk, Dry Chillies, Vegetables and Fruits and Gur. In case of Rural Labourers, Assam recorded a maximum increase of 4 points mainly due to rise in prices of Rice, Fish, Vegetables and Fruits, Firewood, Kerosene Oil and Cinema Tickets. On the other hand Punjab recorded a maximum decrease of 3 points and 2 points for Agricultural Laboureres and Rural Laboureres respectively mainly due to fall in prices of Wheat Atta, Vegetables and Fruits, Firewood and Washing Soap.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL decreased to 3.00 percent in May 2005 from 3.02 per cent in the previous month. In case of Rural Laboureres the rate of inflation remained stationery at 2.99 percent. Respective rates of inflation during May 2004 were 1.83% and 1.82 %.
