Monday, June 13, 2005

The Human Resource Development Minister, Shri. Arjun Singh has called upon the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to carry out its twin mandate- that of a regulator and a facilitator to help the country in achieving its rightful status in the new globalised world. Addressing the first meeting of the reconstituted General Council of the AICTE here today, he said that a number of decisions taken by the AICTE in the recent past had created ‘certain imbalances’ which is of concern not only to the administrators but also to students and other stakeholders.

Shri. Singh said that ‘short-cuts’ were adopted in a situation of ‘high demand’ and ‘low supply’ which ultimately led to distortions and even sometimes, corruption. He asked the AICTE to follow the road map drawn up for the promotion of technical education in the country in a reasonable and conscientious manner, cautioning that corruption will not be tolerated at any cost.
