Ministry of Railways have approved adoption of Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) based state-of-the-art three-phase technology traction propulsion system for AC/DC Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) deployed for suburban services in Mumbai area. The work of adoption of this technology is in progress, which would lead to improved energy efficiency through regenerative braking, reliable services and enhanced passengers comfort.
The IGBT based traction propulsion system is also being developed for three phased electric locomotives to improve energy efficiency and prepare itself to manage the obsolescence of Gate Turn Off (GTO) based technology to meet the in-house requirement as well as to become a global competitor in this field.
Meanwhile Indian Railway has successfully absorbed the technology for production of state-of-the-art High Horse Power three-phase Electric Locomotives. The series production of four-axled passenger locos type WAP-5, six-axled passenger locos type WAP-7 and freight locos type WAG-9 is going on at the Indian Railways flag ship loco production unit at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), Chittaranjan. As many as 125 such locomotives are targeted to be manufactured during the Tenth Plan.
