Sunday, June 19, 2005

Under an Action Plan, which is proposed to be implemented, the Indian Railways have re-fixed the freight loading target during the current financial year i.e. 2005-06. Though the earlier target of loading for the year was fixed at 635 million tonnes, the internal target has been revised and re-fixed at 700 million tonnes.

“During the last three decades from 1950 to 1980, Indian Railways were able to load only 123 million tonnes of additional freight traffic, whereas through the Mission – 600 and Mission – 700, we are committed to load 140 million tonnes additional traffic”. Addressing the recently concluded General Managers’ Conference, the Railway Minister Shri Lalu Prasad not only underlined the need to improve the availability and productivity of locomotives but also to rationalize engine outage.

The Railway Minister also called upon the General Managers to speed up the marketing efforts in order to capture additional traffic. In this connection he specified that we have to give special emphasis on import and export traffic through ports. “To achieve the target of 700 million tonnes we have to generate an additional demand of 25 to 30 million tonnes”, the Minister added.
