98 major central projects are due for commissioning during the period 2005-06. These include 18 in petroleum, 15 in power, 13 in railways, 1 in fertilizer, 2 in steel, 2 in Health and Family Welfare, 40 in Road Transport and Highways, 2 in Telecom, 2 in shipping and ports, 1 in civil aviation, 1 in atomic energy and one in urban development.
No project is slated for commissioning in coal, water resources and mines sector during the period. All the projects due for completion during the period cost Rs. 100 crore and above each. Some of them are mega projects of Rs. 1000 crore and above. This information is contained in the Flash Report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for April 2005. The Report contains the latest status of mega & major central sector projects numbering 317.
The Ministry has taken up for monitoring one new project from the power sector i.e. the Kambng Hydro-Electric Project of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO). Approved in December last at a cost of nearly Rs. 2500 crore, the mega project is scheduled for commissioning during March, 2010. Following completion of 9 projects i.e. 7 from telecom and 2 from railways sector, the Ministry has ended their monitoring. One telecom project in Punjab seems to have been frozen due to unspecified reasons.
20 projects i.e. 7 petroleum, 6 telecom, 4 power, 2 road Transport, and one railways have reported further delays in their commissioning, ranging from one to 24 months. The project reporting highest delay of 24 months is from the petroleum sector belonging to the Oil and Natural Gas Commission, followed by a 12 month delay in a telecom project i.e. the National Radio Spectrum Management and Monitoring system in WPC.
The Ministry has alerted the concerned departments to take corrective measures for preventing further slippages in these projects.
