A three-member team consisting of Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training, Shri A.N. Tiwari, Director, CBI, Shri U.S. Misra and Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission, Shri Sujit Banerjee has reached Brazil's Capital Brasilia for participating in the IVth Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity. The meeting will take place from 7th to 10th June,2005 under the theme"From Words to Deeds". Representatives of Government and from about 100 countries are participating in this meet, besides International and non-governmental organisation and civil society entities.

During the forum meeting, a series of panels, lectures and workshops will be held to discuss issues ,such as money laundering, conflicts of interest and public procurement. Money laundering is likely to be the focus at the forum meeting where experts and officials will assess the effectiveness of international cooperation measures, discuss the new investigative strategies and share successful experiences in the recovery of embezzled funds. At the recent United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in April in Bangkok, Thailand, money laundering was identified as a problem with the potential to compromise national development and economies, jeopardize international trade and increased poverty. This particular crime basically involves resources deriving from the bribery of public officials and the embezzlement of state funds. The Indian team will share its experience and expertise in the fields of investigation of various crimes and also gain experience from their interaction with other countries.

The global forum on fighting corruption and safeguarding integrity is a multilateral gathering held every two years and brings together Govt. representatives, specialists and academics from various parts of the world to discuss and enhance measures for fighting corruption. The global forum primarily aims at promoting and facilitating international exchanges through periodic meetings and permanent forum for debate. The first meeting of the forum took place in Washington D.C. in the year 1999, while the second forum was held in the Hague, Netherlands in 2001. The third global forum which took place in Seoul, South Korea in 2003 was devoted to the theme "Growing Challenges, Shared responsibilities".
