The mineral production in April 2005 recorded a growth of 3.10 per cent as compared to that of the corresponding month of previous year. The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during the month was Rs.5,636 crore. The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs. 2,219 crore (39 per cent). Next in the order of importance were : petroleum (crude) Rs.1,561 crore, natural gas (utilised) Rs.721 crore, iron ore Rs.532 crore, lignite Rs. 191 crore and limestone Rs.143 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95 per cent of the total value of mineral production in April 2005.

Production levels of important minerals during the month were : coal 311 lakh tonnes, lignite 27 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilized) 2,487 million cu. m., petroleum (crude) 28 lakh tonnes, bauxite 1,017 thousand tonnes, chromite 226 thousand tonnes, copper conc. 11 thousand tonnes, gold 241 kg., iron ore 142 lakh tonnes, lead conc. 7 thousand tonnes, manganese ore 228 thousand tonnes, zinc conc. 60 thousand tonnes, apatite & phosphorite 119 thousand tonnes, dolomite 387 thousand tonnes, limestone 141 lakh tonnes and magnesite 30 thousand tonnes.

During the month, a nominal increase recorded in the output of dolomite. But there was decrease in production of coal, lignite, petroleum (crude), natural gas (utilised), bauxite, chromite, gold, iron ore, lead concentrate, manganese ore, zinc concentrate, apatite & phosphorite, limestone and magnesite.
