country report on mdg by august

Thursday, June 09, 2005

The Centre is currently engaged in the compilation of the Country Report on "Millennium Development Goals" which is expected to be ready by this August. An inter-ministerial Expert Committee set up under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, has already held discussions reviewing the Indicators, which are relevant to India and ascertained the current status of statistics availability at periodic intervals, as also determined the specific Source Agencies to gather the data.

The Millennium Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly at the turn of the 21st century, reaffirmed its commitment to the right to development, peace, security and gender equality as well as eradication of many dimensions of poverty and overall sustainable development. The Declaration included eight development Goals and eighteen Time-Bound Targets. In order to monitor the progress towards the achievements of these goals and targets, the UN set-ups, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other Agencies have come together and agreed on 48 Quantitative Indicators.

Out of 48 Millennium Development Goal Indicators, only 36 are relevant for India. The Inter-Ministerial Expert Committee held in-depth discussions on India-relevant indicators to find ways and means of achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Most of these indicators relate to the social sector. In the meantime, the Ministry has taken steps to provide a statistical profile of these Indicators by 2015 for proper vetting/monitoring of the achievement of the MDGs by the concerned ministries and departments themselves.
