Lt Gen Mohinder Puri, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems and Training), addressed the Indian contingent proceeding to participate in the United Nations Mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) at an impressive Special Sainik Sammelan held at the NCC auditorium at Delhi Cantonment on 18 July 05. The Deputy Chief was received by the Additional Director General of Staff Duties, Maj Gen RPS Malhan, YSM, SM and the Contingent Commander Colonel S V Bhaskar. The General officer boosted the moral of the troops for their new assignment and encouraged them to strive hard and continue to do the nation proud. The Special Sainik Sammelan was later followed by tea and interaction with tro! ops.
The Indian contingent comprises of elements drawn from various arms and services of the Indian Army with a major part being formed by the Infantry. The Infantry battalion selected for this assignment is the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (PVC*). The battalion has been selected for the UN assignment based on its rich history and gallant performances not only in OPERATION VIJAY at Kargil but also during the recent tenure in the North-Eastern Sector. The unit, raised in Oct 1966 has the rare distinction of earning two 'Param Vir Chakra', eight 'Vir Chakra' and fourteen 'Sena Medals' in one operation i.e. OPERATION VIJAY. The battalion has recently been awarded' Battle Honour -DRASS AND MUSHKOH' Theatre Honour- KA! RGIL'.
