Lok Sabha
The Election Commission has started Special Campaign Drives for scrutinizing of the electoral rolls and sorting out claims and objections from people at large number of designated locations on all holidays. The electoral rolls are being furnished to the Gramsabhas, Resident Welfare Associations, Local Authorities, NGOs and recognized political parties for getting their cooperation in deleting the names of those persons who are no longer residing in their areas or have expired. For this purpose, the computers are being used intensively to identify and weed out duplicate or multiple entries. The electoral rolls are being revised now almost every year.
As per the Election Commissions view, there are hardly any fictitious electors in the electoral rolls. However, there are possibilities of duplicate or multiple entries of names, names of persons which is resulting in the inflated electoral rolls. Even sometimes, the names of ineligible persons find their way in the electoral rolls due to false information provided by the applicants. The Election Commission has taken several measures to remove the duplicate or multiple entries as well as the names of dead persons from the rolls.
This information was given by the Minister of Law and Justice, Shri H. R. Bhardwaj in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
