Noted social worker Smt. Zaputuo Angami of Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home, Nagaland is the recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Manav Sewa Award for the year 2004.
Smt. Angami, 78, started her career as a nurse under the medical department of the Government of Nagaland. During her posting in Kohima Cigla Hospital an incident took place which changed her live completely. A woman from a poor background admitted in the hospital for delivery, died shortly after giving birth to a baby boy. Smt. Angami who was already having a daughter at that time brought the boy home and adopted him. Over the years, she has become the mother of orphans, destitutes and children abandoned either due to poverty or born out of unwed relationships. At present, there are 105 inmates at Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home, built by Smt. Angami. With her own initiatives, she has established a primary school upto class IV. Her centre is also giving training the field of weaving, knitting and tailoring to girls.
The Rajiv Gandhi Manav Sewa Award was instituted on August 20, 1994 on the occasion of the 50th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.
