reconstitution of indian mercantile marine administration

Thursday, July 14, 2005

The Union Cabinet today approved the creation of two posts in the Directorate General of Shipping. It also approved the up-gradation of two posts of Senior DDG to the post of Joint Director General and Deputy Chief Ship Surveyor to the post of Chief Ship Surveyor.

By creating more posts in the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai, and its offices, the Ministry of Shipping will be able to bring these disciplines equal to international standards as enshrined in International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Conventions. It is also expected that greater revenue would be generated by creating more posts of surveyors in the Directorate by way of fees besides a healthy environment at sea and the sea-coasts.

The main objective of this proposal is to strengthen the Indian Mercantile Marine Administration with a view to:

(i) meeting the national and international obligations in more effective and efficient manner through a properly balanced and strong technical set up.

(ii) enhancing the technical capability of the Indian Mercantile Marine Administration to deal with the matters relating to ships’ safety, design, construction, repairs, survey, equipments and plans approval along with framing of rules of these matters.

(iii) taking care of the national and international concerns relating to safety and pollution of marine environment arising out of marine accidents and oil spill.

(iv) equipping the Indian Mercantile Marine Administration fully to face any national and international exigency so that the trade and business of India do not suffer.

(v) taking care of neglected sectors like vessels and fishing vessels where lakhs of people earn their livelihood.
