Thursday, July 28, 2005

Consequent to the incident of fire, threat of major oil pollution was anticipated in Bombay High. A dornier aircraft of Coast Guard took off from Daman this morning and reported thin sheen of oil extending upto 10 Nautical Miles in easterly direction towards land. The aircraft is undertaking aerial dispersal of Oil Spill Dispersants for neutralization of oil slick.

The pollution response operations commenced today. Mobilisation of pollution response resources are co-ordinated by Indian Coast Guard with ONGC, Mumbai Port Trust and other agencies. Three Coast Guard ships equipped with pollution response equipment and oil spill dispersants have reached the area for oil spill containment.

The Bombay High North (BHN) platform has sustained damages and has gone down completely. There is no damage sustained to other three platforms adjacent to BHN probably due to the activation of automatic shut off system of BHN platform. Coast Guard Ship Vijaya is in the area and carrying out search and rescue operations. 367 personnel have been rescued and eight bodies recovered so far. The search is still on for eight missing personnel. Six divers are still trapped inside the decompression chambers.
