No report of loss of life or damage to property has been received in the powerful earthquake that hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands last night. The quake, which had its epicenter south of Port Blair in the Nicobar Island region - at 8.4 degree North latitude and 92.5 degree East longitude, measured 7.2 on the Richter Scale. Mild tremors were also felt in coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Immediately after receipt of information regarding the earthquake late last evening, the Home Ministry kept a constant watch over the situation and was in touch with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration, and with governments of the coastal States. The Control Room of the Ministry exercised constant vigil throughout the night. No Tsunami alert was issued in the wake of the quake. The Home Minister Shri Shivraj Patil reviewed the situation with senior Home Ministry officials.
Two after-shocks of moderate intensity were felt this morning in the region. The first one measured 5.3 on the Richter Scale, while the second measured 5.7 and was located off the West Coast of the Nicobar Island.
