mecl exploration programmes in 2004-05

Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), a public sector unit of the Ministry of Mines, continued its exploration activities for coal and lignite during the year 2004-05 on behalf of Ministry of Coal, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited and Indian Iron & Steel Company Limited. Besides, it carried out exploration for copper, bauxite, iron ore, chromite, ferro-silicon grade quartzite, lead-zinc, slim hole drilling and geo-technical studies on behalf of Ministry of Mines, M/s. ONGC, IRCON, HZL and other companies.

The promotional exploration for copper was taken in Thanewasna in Maharashtra, Bhagal (Ph-II) and Dholamala in Rajasthan and Dhadkidih of Jharkhand; for gold at Girar, Uttar Pradesh; for Tungsten at Bankura, West Bengal; for bauxite at Serengdag, Jharkhand; for zinc ore at Kalabar, Rajasthan; for chromite at Nuggihalli, Karnataka; for ferro-silicon grade quartzite at Kalaktang, Arunachal Pradesh and for Glass sand at Jiajuri, Assam.

The exploration for coal and lignite on behalf of the Ministry of Coal was taken in the command areas of South Eastern Coalfields Limited, Eastern Coalfields Limited, Western Coalfields Limited, North-Eastern Coalfields Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited. The company carried out exploration for lignite in the States of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.

During the year, it also took up exploration works under contractual programme on behalf of various public sector undertakings of the Ministry and private agencies in different parts of the country.
