Life sentence for four for murdering former Madhya Pradesh Transport Minister

The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Balaghat (MP), Monday convicted four accused persons, S/Shri Bhaiya Lal @ Binjal, Chait Ram, Makhan @ Arjun and Ms. Parvati Bai @ Paro for murdering Shri Likhi Ram Kanwre, the then Transport Minister of Madhya Pradesh and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The case was initially registered by the State Police but was transferred to CBI on 24.2.2000 on the request of the State Govt.

After registering a case on 29.2.2000, the Special Investigation Unit of CBI was able to solve this murder case within seven months. The investigation revealed that an encounter took place on 2.12.99 in Thadicherla Reserve Forest (AP) in which four naxalites were killed. In order to take revenge of the killing of four naxalites by A.P. Police in an encounter, the accused persons with some others entered into a criminal conspiracy to eliminate a top ranking Govt. functionary. In pursuance of the said criminal conspiracy, the accused persons alongwith others stormed the house of Likhi Ram Kanwre situated in village Sonpuri, Distt. Balaghat (MP) and dragged him out of his residence and brutally murdered him with an axe.

A chargesheet was filed by CBI in the case in 2000. During trial of the case, CBI produced 91 prosecution witnesses who were spread all over India before concluding prosecution evidence.
