The Minister for Tribal Affairs and Development of North Eastern Region , Shri P.R. Kyndiah met Chief Executive Members (CEMs) and Executive Members (EMs) of Automous Hill Council and Autonomous District Council of North East States here, yesterday. Also participated in the meeting were - Shri G.C. Langthasa, Minister for Hill Development, Assam and Chairman of North Eastern Autonomous District Council Forum, Chief Executive Members of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Jaintia Hills Autonomous council and Dy. Chief Executive of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council and Executive Members of Mara Council and representatives of Home Affairs.
In the first preliminary meeting between the Government and representatives of Hill District Councils during the regime of UPA Government, Shri Kyndiah assured the CEMs and EMs to look into their demands. Their demands included direct funding of various developmental programmes and Centrally sponsored Schemes of the Autonomous Councils/Autonomous District Councils on the pattern of Panchayati Raj and in particular by deleting Para 12A in case of Meghalaya, of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution or by making suitable amendment to the same. They also demanded that the Autonomous Councils/Autonomous District Councils be brought under the purview of Article-280 of the Constitution of India by way of suitable constitutional amendment like that of municipalities and panchayats.
