The Government of India has decided to introduce Medical Visa to the foreigners who come for the medical treatment and are required to live in India for extended period. The Medical Visa would be admissible to all foreigners seeking medical attendance in reputed/recognized specialized hospitals/treatment centres in the country. The initial period of such a visa would be for one year or for the period of treatment whichever is less. Unlike tourist visa, medical visa is extendable. The State Governments/FRROs have been delegated powers to extend such visa.
Health care sector in India has undergone a fast change with low cost super specialty medical centres coming up all over the country. These have attracted foreigners coming to India for medical treatment in a large number. In the absence of a specific visa for this purpose, foreigners were so far coming on tourist visa which is limited in duration and thus were finding it difficult to get their stay extended for medical treatment.
The key feature of this visa is that it will be available to all the foreign nationals including nationals of China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
