An India-Japan Joint Study Group has been constituted with representation from Governments of India and Japan, economic experts and the private sector of both the countries to enhance Indo-Japan cooperation in trade, commerce, investment, development cooperation, economic partnership and regional economic integration. The Joint Study Group will deliberate on ways to strengthen and deepen India-Japan economic and commercial relations and submit its report to both Governments by June 2006.
In its first meeting, held in New Delhi on July 19-20, 2005, the Group had positive and fruitful discussions on the present status of economic, trade and commercial exchanges between India and Japan and the existing institutional frameworks, infrastructure and mechanisms for enhancing such exchanges. Preliminary discussions were also held between the two sides on trade in goods and services, investment, infrastructure development and other areas of economic cooperation.
Shri Ashok Jha, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Government of India, is the leader of the Indian side. Other members include representatives from Ministry of External Affairs, Departments of Commerce and Industrial Policy & Promotion, Planning Commission, NCAER, RIS, CII, FICCI etc. Mr. Mitoji Yabunaka, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Government of Japan, is the leader of the Japanese side.
Next meeting of the Joint Study Group has been scheduled for November 2005.
