An Indonesian delegation led by Mr. Jero Wacik, Minister of Culture and Tourism, today met the Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy and senior officials of the Ministry. They discussed the issue of cooperation between the two nations in the fields of film co-production, promotion of cinema and strengthening of Indonesian film industry. In his remarks, Shri Jaipal Reddy said that India is prepared to collaborate and cooperate with Indonesia in exchanging entries to the Film Festivals in the two countries. He said that private Film Festivals have also come of age in India and Jakarta can participate in these ventures too. He said that the film industry in India is in the private sector and the Government can play the role of a motivator.
The Minister added that Europe has become aware of the potential of the Indian cinema and has been offering several concessions to the film-makers who choose European locations for their shooting. He said that the Government is open to the idea of screening of Indonesian films over Doordarshan if these are dubbed or sub-titled in Hindi. The Minister said that Indonesian Film Industry could benefit from the expertise and training facilities available at the Film and Television Institutes of India at Pune and Kolkata.
The visiting Minister welcomed the Ministers statement as a very good positive news. He said that Indonesia has beautiful locations which can be tapped for outdoor shooting by the Indian film makers. The Indonesian Government is willing to consider providing concessions to promote this area of cooperation. He said that Indian cinema is quite popular in Indonesia and his country is willing to learn from the Indian film industry.
Shri S.K. Arora, Secretary, I&B in his remarks said that the potential for cinema in India is immense and films and television have both grown together. The Ministry can facilitate closer cooperation between the various film industry associations of the two countries for mutual benefit, he added.
