The Ministry of Human Resource Development has prepared a new scheme for the further development and promotion of Tamil Language. The scheme, which received the approval of the Minister for Human Resource Development, Shri. Arjun Singh today, envisages setting up of a Tamil Language Promotion Board and also a Centre of Excellence in Central Institute of Indian Language (CIIL), Mysore to carry on various developmental works on Tamil language and literature. The Department of Secondary and Higher Education in MHRD will support 10 doctoral fellowships and 5 post doctoral fellowships on classical Tamil literature. The scheme also provides for three life time achievement awards Rs. 1 Lakh each including two international awards to Tamil scholars of eminence and five awards of Rs. 50, 000 each for distinguished scholars of Tamil Language for their outstanding contribution.
It may be recalled that as per the commitment given in the National Common Minimum Programme, Tamil language was declared as a classical language on October 12, 2004. The Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore is already engaged in development and promotion of Tamil language besides other Indian languages. It recently launched Tamil on-line Learning Programme.
