Energy Experts from SAARC countries met here today to formulate the Terms of Reference of Study on Energy Trade in SAARC region. The meeting was organized by India under the action plan finalised by the SAARC Working Group on Energy. Experts from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides India being the host country were represented at the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, the Secretary, Ministry of Power, Shri R.V. Shahi underlined the need for cooperation in the field of energy among the SAARC member countries for optimal utilization of energy resources in the region for the benefit of all member states.

The Terms of Reference recommended by the Energy Experts aims at a sector/fuel-wise study on options, benefits and constraints of energy trade in the region. The study would examine the International best practices in trade and their relevance to the region and analyse various technological, financial and commercial options for promoting energy trade in the region.

Cooperation in energy sector, including the concept of Energy Ring, has been identified as a key thrust area, in the face of increasing demand for energy and the concerns about energy security by the Working Group on Energy of SAARC countries.
