Three Cape Gauge VDM 4 Diesel Electric Locomotives are being manufactured at Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi for export to Sudan Railway Corporation through RITES/Expotech. This is the first that type of Locomotive, which is being exported to Sudan Railway Corporation. This locomotive has DLW built 6 cylinder in line-1350 HP turbo- supercharged engine, Electrical AC/DC transmission, Co-Co wheel arrangement and is equipped with air brake and dynamic brake. Some modifications have been incorporated to suit the rough working conditions in Sudan. It is perceived in International market that DLW has an expertise in manufacturing the cape gauge locomotives.
The symbolic key of the 1350 HP VDM-4 Cape Gauge Locomotive was handed over to DLW’s Marketing Department at a simple ceremony by Shri R.Velu, Minister of State for Railways during his visit to DLW on July 8, 2005. He inspected loco manufacturing facilities at the workshop along with Shri Ravinder Sharma, General Manager, DLW and other senior officers. Appreciating the DLW performance, he declared a group award of Rs. 2,50,000/- for the staff.
