Lok Sabha

Indian Railways is exploring possibilities for development of rail network through partnership with State Governments, multilateral agencies, project beneficiaries and lending institutions. It is primarily through cost sharing, participation in equity in case of implementation through creation of Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), Build-Own-Transfer (BOT) models and in some cases privately owned infrastructure viz. port railways, freight terminals.

Ministry of Railways have already commissioned rail connectivity to Mundra port with private investment and Surendranagar-Pipavay Gauge Conversiuon with public-private partnership. Gandhidham – Palanpur Gauge Conversion project and Hassan – Mangalore Gauge Conversion project are being implemented through investments from private sector and other agencies. Ministry of Railways is also implementing certain projects in the States of Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra on cost sharing basis with State Government/Undertaking of State Government.

The above information was given by the Minister of state for Railways Shri R. Velu in written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
