The strength of Indian soldiers deployed in United Nations (UN) Peace Keeping Missions is 3551 in Democratic Republic of Congo, 648 in Lebanon, 1554 in Ethiopia – Eritrea, eight in Ivory Coast, 11 in Burundi, 175 in Sudan and two in UN Headquarters, New York. While no casualties occurred in the year 2004, two casualties have been reported during the year 2005. The compensation to the next of the kin of the deceased soldiers is paid as per the extant norms of the Army or UN which includes gratuity, ex-gratia, liberalized family pension and Army Group Insurance Fund.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee in a written reply to Shri Dushyant Singh and others in Lok Sabha today.
