The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved the continuation of the ‘Nutrition Programme for Adolescent Girls’ (NPAG) in 2005-06 in 51 districts identified by the Planning Commission. However, the pregnant and lactating women, who are covered under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme, would be excluded from coverage under this programme.

For implementation of NPAG during the year 2005-06, it is estimated that a sum of Rs.120.94 crores would be required. The CCEA also approved allocation of funds as Special Central Assistance on 100% grant basis to States/UTs.

The Planning Commission launched the pilot project ‘Nutrition Project for Adolescent Girls’ initially for a period of 2 years, i.e. for 2002-03 and 2003-04. Free food-grains at the rate of Rs.6 per kg. per beneficiary per month, are provided to the undernourished adolescent girls (weight less than 35 kg) and pregnant/lactating women (weight less than 40 kg) in 51 backward districts under the project, initially for a period of three months. Besides, the following services are provided:
