consumer price index up by 3 points in june
records 3.9 per cent rise over a year

The all-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees CPI(UNME) on base 1984-85=100, for the month of June, 2005 was released here today by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The all-India CPI (UNME) for June, 2005 is 448, which is three points more than the index for the previous month i.e. May, 2005. At the group level, the index for June, 2005 when compared to last month i.e. May, 2005, has increased by 1.18 percent in respect of “Food, Beverages & Tobacco” and 0.44 percent in respect of "Miscellaneous” group. With the corresponding all-India index for June, 2004 being 431, the index for the month of June, 2005 has shown a rise of 3.9% over the year.


Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for all-India and 59 selected urban centres in the country for June, 2005; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for June, 2005 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for June, 2004 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI(UNME) for June, 2005 in respect of 59 selected urban centres with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely June, 2004. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 0.7 to 8.8 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Allahabad and the least in the case of Meerut. The increases are 0.0 to 2.0 percent for 7 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 26 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 16 centres and 6.1 percent and above, for 10 centres. As many as 31 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the all-India figure of 3.9 percent while one centre has recorded equal percentage increase and 27 centres have recorded higher percentage increase as compared to the all-India average.
