The Union Cabinet today approved a proposal for the construction of the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs on the Central Vista at the cross of the Maulana Azad Road and Janpath, New Delhi at a cost of Rs.172.75 crores. It also decided that the building would be named as Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan.
The Ministry of External Affairs has been facing functional difficulties as its offices are presently located in various premises like Akbar Bhawan, Patiala House, Shastri Bhawan and Indian Society of International Law (ISIL) building. The proposed building will bring together the different branches of the Ministry and help in better coordination and smoother functioning. Moreover, since the Ministry of External Affairs is frequently visited by foreign dignitaries and diplomats representing countries all over the world, it is important that it is housed in a building which projects a suitable image of India to the outside world.
Since the plot is located in the midst of buildings that have strong architectural characteristics designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the objective is to construct a building, which could be considered a landmark, matching the grandeur of the National Museum, the National Archives and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts located in the vicinity.
CPWD is the planning and executing agency for the project.
