CBI invokes MCOC Act against Sansar Chand

The Central Bureau of Investigation has invoked the stringent provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) as extended to NCT, Delhi against Sansar Chand and Sudesh Kumar, both infamous for wildlife crime. Intimation to this effect has been given by the investigating agency to the competent court. This is the first instance of the application of the stringent provisions of MCOCA in the investigation of a wildlife crime in the country.

It may be noted that CBI had taken the custody remand of Sansar Chand in connection with the Kamla Nagar Police Station Case of wild life crime which was transferred to CBI from the Wild Life Department of Delhi. After expiry of the custody period of 10 days, Sansar Chand was today produced before the ACMM, Tis Hazari Court, Shri Manoj Jain, who granted further CBI custody of Sansar Chand upto 14.7.2005. During the course of investigation of the wildlife cases which CBI is currently investigating, the ingestigating agency has come across evidence indicating the organised nature of the wildlife crimes committed by Sansar Chand and his crime syndicates. These evidences have been corroborated by revelation of Sansar Chand during the course of his custodial interrogation.

After obtaining several leads and analysis of evidence, CBI was of the view that the investigation of the crimes committed by Sansar Chand can be effectively tackled under the provisions of MCOCA. The Agency also felt that under the provisions of the Act, speedy trial will be possible to meet the ends of justice.
