Under the schemes of National Literacy Mission (NLM), funds are not released to State Governments and Union Territory Administrations, but directly to District and State Level registered societies. Rs. 22661.50 lakhs have been released to these societies during 2004-05. No new scheme has been introduced by Government. However, the National Literacy Mission Authority has decided in April, 2005 to launch Special Literacy Drive, to be funded from existing schemes, in 150 districts of the country, having lowest literacy rates as per Census 2001.
