The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased by two points each during June 2005 to stand at 345 points for Agricultural Labourers and 347 for Rural Labourers.
The rise and fall in index varied from state to state. In case of Agricultural Labourers 13 states reflected an increase in indices ranging between 2 to 5 points while five states showed a decrease ranging between 1 to 4 points. The indices remained constant in two states.
In case of Rural Labourers also 13 states reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 5 points while four states showed a decrease of one to three points. In another three states there was no change in the indices.
Bihar in case of Agricultural Labourers and Bihar and Orissa in case of Rural Labourers experienced the sharpest increase of 5 points each. The increase has been mainly due to increase in prices of rice, wheat atta, maize, chillies and vegetables and fruits. On the other hand, Jammu & Kashmir recorded a maximum decrease of 4 points and three points for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers respectively mainly due to decrease in prices of vegetables and fruits and firewood.
Meghalaya with 365 points for Agricultural Labourers and Haryana with 364 points in case of Rural Labourers figured at the top of the index table. Manipur remained at the bottom of the index for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers with 312 points each.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL and CPI-RL decreased from 3.00% and 2.90% respectively in May 2005 to 2.68% and 2.66% in June, 2005. Respective rates of inflation during June, 2004 were 1.82% and 1.81%
