Rajya Sabha
The quality of extractable coal reserve in our country amenable for open cast mining is in general of lower quality containing more than 34 per cent ash. The bulk of coal produced from open cast mines in the country is of inferior quality.
Coal India Limited (CIL) has taken a number of steps to ensure quality coal supply. It has taken up beneficiation of the coal through coal washeries. It has deployed new technology like selective mining with the use of surface miners in various open cast mines. CIL has adopted controlled blasting methods for reducing the possibility of admixture of coal with over burden materials and improving fragmentation of coal. It has started picking of shales / stones before crushing and screening most of its coal in the coal handling plants, thereby improving the quality.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
