The agreements for World Bank assistance for Tamil Nadu Health System Development Project were signed between Government of India, Government of Tamil Nadu and World Bank, here today. The World Bank is providing a loan of US$ 110.83 million for the project. The total cost of the project is estimated at US$ 131.59 million with IDA loan amounting to US$ 110.83 million and Government of Tamil Nadu contributing the balance amount.
The project would assist Tamil Nadu in improving the quality of Health Services both public and private through (i) increased access particularly by poor, disadvantaged and tribal groups; (ii) development and pilot testing of effective interventions to address key health challenges specifically non-communicable diseases; (iii) improved oversight and management of the health care system (both public and private); and (iv) increased effectiveness of public sector hospital services, primarily at district and sub-district levels.
The IDA credit is available under standard terms and is repayable in 35 years including a grace period of 10 years. The project will be implemented over a period of five years and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2010. The agreements were signed by Shri Ranjit Bannerji, Joint Secretary (FB), Department of Economic Affairs on behalf of the Government of India, Shri N. Sundaradevan, Secretary (Health & Family Welfare) on behalf of Government of Tamil Nadu and Mr. Michael Carter, Country Director, World Bank on behalf of the World Bank.
