Life is trying to gather itself bit by bit after the seaquake shook the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004. The giant tsunamis smashed into southern coastal States creating extensive damage to infrastructure besides killing thousands of inhabitants and tourists. After such a magnitude of devastation, rescue and relief operations are on war footing to bring the sabotaged life to normal.

The rescue and relief operation undertaken by the coordinated effort of the unified command includes evacuation of people by ships and aircraft and the air-drop of food and other supplies by naval and coast guard helicopters. The Army is involved in providing various items to victims such as dry rations, water, clothes, generators, water tanks, folding cots, medicines, chemicals, gypsy and motor cycles with riders and plastic chairs. ‘The overall situation in Car Nicobar and other affected places is fast improving with relief material having reached almost all the places,’ said vice chairman of the Integrated Relief Command (IRC), Lt. General B S Thakur. Around 40 Nicobarese youth were also engaged in systematic distribution of the material.

Audio/Video link with Campbell Bay, Kamorta, Diglipur, Rangat, Hut Bay and Car Nicobar under the Development Communication Network has been restored, thereby facilitating the administrative work as well as sharing information regarding the survivors and the missing. The channel has been extensively used for the last two days between Campbell Bay and Kamorta from the terminals at the Secretariat and the government Polytechnic at Dollygunj. Information about survivors as well as the missing persons from the areas affected by tsunami is being collected through this terminal and being shared with the public. These are being placed/updated on the website of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration - www.and.nic.in (PIB Features)
