Out of 23,000 kilometres of track renewal planned for the Tenth Five Year Plan from 2002-2003 to 2006-2007, 12,768 kilometres of track renewal has been done upto November 2004.

The track renewal progress was 3000 kilometres a year during 2000-2001 before setting up of Special Railway Safety Fund (SRSF). This has reached to 5000 kilometres in 2003-2004.

The yearly targets for track renewal are fixed keeping in view availability of funds and the Plan size for the Railways. Planning is accordingly made to achieve the targets.

Track length totalling 16538 kilometres was due for renewal on April 1, 2001. It was sanctioned under SRSF with a corpus of Rs. 17,000 crores. Track renewal in the period after April 1, 2001, was sanctioned under Depreciation Reserve Fund (DRF).
