THREE DAYS CBI CUSTODY FOR MCD JUNIOR ENGINEER : SEARCHES REVEAL ASSETS OVER SEVERAL LAKHS

The Junior Engineer and the Beldar of M.C.D. who were arrested by CBI for demanding and receiving bribe of Rs.1.25 lakh from the complainant, were produced in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate, Patiala House, Shri V.K. Khanna who remanded both of them to police custody till 8.1.2005.

Soon after the trap, searches were carried out at the houses of both the accused persons. Searches at the house of the Junior Engineer led to recovery of Rs.5.46 lakh in cash, jewellery weighing 910 gms worth Rs.5.02 lakh, two Bank accounts in the name of self and wife having a balance of Rs.2.50 lakh and Rs.1.21 lakh respectively. Papers pertaining to a four-bed room HIG Super Class Flat in Vikaspuri, a flat in a Group Housing Society for which Rs.5.5 lakhs have been deposited and a plot of land in the name of the accused Junior Engineer at Bhondsi, UP (paper value Rs.8 lakh) were also recovered during the searches. It was found that the wife of the J.E. was running a school named Shemrock EDEN and Rs.22,925/ were deposited in the bank account of the school. A bank locker in the name of his wife was also located which is yet to be operated.

Searches at the house of the Beldar led to the recovery of Rs.70345/- in cash and documents pertaining to bank account in his name.

CBI registered a case against the J.E., Building, Green Park, MCD and the Beldar who was working as his tout, on the complaint that he was demanding bribe from the complainant, alleging violation of the sanctioned building plan of MCD for construction of a building in Green Park New Delhi area. On the complaint, a CBI team laid a trap. The J.E. came to the site of the construction along with the Beldar and demanded the bribe of Rs.5 lakh from the complainant for over-looking the alleged violation in the construction. The J.E. threatened the complainant with demolition if the bribe amount was not paid. Both the accused were caught red handed after having accepted part payment of the bribe of Rs.1.25 lakh from the complainant. Personal search on the spot led to the recovery of cash amount of Rs.7,100/- from the J.E. and Rs.19,390/- from the Beldar.
