A Technology Mission on Railway Safety has been taken up jointly by the IIT, Kanpur, Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow, the R&D wing of the Ministry of Railways and Industries, to focus national attention and drive modern technologies for monitoring, control, communications, design, electronics and materials for Railway Safety.
The Technology Mission envisages four Mission Programmes consisting of 14 projects at an estimated cost of Rs. 26.5 crores. Half of the cost will be borne by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the remaining half shared by the Ministry of Railways and Industries.
The Mission objective is to develop and adopt state-of-the-art safety, control and design technologies defined by needs related to Indian conditions. The Mission will formulate and implement projects aimed at achieving higher throughput, lower cost of transmission per unit and safer train movement.
The Technology Mission will cover Traction and Rolling Stock, Track and Bridges, Signal and Communications and Fog Vision Instrumentation.
The Mission has commenced on November 1, 2004 with a duration of three years. Additional six months will be required at the end for technology transfer.
The initial activities of the Mission are in progress. The preliminary work of formation of projects teams, literature review and survey is being conducted.
Mission On Traction and Rolling Stock: project team has been formed, literature survey being conducted and use of laser vision system for measuring angle of attack being explored. Regular interaction and exchange of information through mail and meetings are being held.
Mission On Tracks and Bridges: Project team has been formed and literature survey being conducted.
Mission On Signals and Communications: Project team has been formed and literature survey being conducted.
Mission On Fog Vision Instrumentation: project team has been constituted. Literature survey is being conducted. Regular interaction and exchange of information are being held.
The Government intends to introduce a Pilot Project on Fog Vision Instrumentation from next season for negotiating hassle-free rail movement during fog.
