Tuesday, January 18, 2005

Target eluded several Infrastructure Sectors during April-November 2004, though they achieved positive growth in comparison with the same period of the previous year. These include Coal, Finished Steel, Telecom and Fertilizers. However, Power, Railway freight, Cargo handling at ports, Cement and Petroleum have succeeded in achieving their targets. Steel was nearly 15 per cent lower and Fertilizer by about 7 per cent below the target. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in a Report on the review of the performance of the Infrastructure Sector during the period has drawn the attention of the government to this for remedial action.

The Report however termed as noteworthy performance, the Railways, for the 2 per cent increase in Revenue Earning Freight Traffic and the Shipping, for Cargo handling at major ports registering an increase of more than 2 per cent. In case of Petroleum, crude oil production was marginally high, while the refinery production was nearly 5 per cent more than the target. A negative growth was noticed in case of wired telephone connections, due to mass surrender of land-lines in preference for cell phones. Power generation was 387.67 billion units, slightly more than the target of 387.55 billion units, for the period.
