The Ministry of Railways has taken various steps to tackle the problem of losses due to loss of revenue in scrap disposal.
The measures taken include intensive checks, provision of electronic weighment bridges at various depots and sheds and computerization of accountal of rail and permanent way material. Besides, complaints of irregularities are investigated by the Vigilance Department and officials found responsible are taken up.
The Railways incurred losses of Rs. 35.7 crores during January-October 2004 on account of leakages of revenue in scrap disposal. During 2003, such losses were of the order of Rs. 34.7 crores and in 2002 of the order of Rs. 23 crores.
