The communication facilities were completely affected in the areas where the Tsunami tidal waves hit the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Following is the status report as of today:
Tamil Nadu : 12 Exchanges went out-of-order. Besides this, transmission lines and individual subscriber lines in the coastal areas were also affected. All were restored within 48 hours. Kerala: 2 Exchanges went out-of-order. Besides this, transmission lines and individual subscriber lines in the coastal areas were also affected. All were restored within 48 hours. ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS In the North Group of Andaman Islands, the telephone exchanges at Diglipur, Kalera, Kalighat, Ram Nagar and Kishori Nagar were completely affected soon after the waves hit the island. However, the communication facilities are now completely restored and all the above exchanges are working.
In the Middle Group of Andaman Islands the telephone exchanges at Baratang, Bakultala, Kadamtala, Long Island, Mayabunder, Nimbudera, Panchavati, Rangat, Shivapuram, Swadesh Nagar, Tugapur, Adazig and Karmatang are now working. However, in the case Karmatang the exchange was restored by replacing OFC equipment.
In the South Group of Andaman Islands the telephone exchanges at Brichgunj, Burmanalla, Chouldani, Ferrargunj, Garacharma, Guptapara, Havelock, Herbertabad, Jirkatang, Minni Bay, Namunagar, Neil, Port Blair, Shadipur, Shoal Bay, Tushnabad, Wandoor, Wimberlygunj and Prathrapur are all working. At Bambooflat, the exchange was submerged in water and damaged. New exchange equipment, power plant and OFC equipment are now installed in the new exchange building. Radio coverage of Wimberlygunj WLL system has been made available.
In the Little Andaman Island, at Hutbay Island the telephone exchange building was completely damaged and equipment submerged. The exchanges were also affected at R.K. Pur and V.K. Pur. At Hutbay, Intermediate Data Rate satellite equipment has been restored. Also a new exchange of 256 line exchange has been commissioned. STD service from Hutbay exchange has been restored. In addition 5 INMARSAT terminals were commissioned. One 7.5 KVA Engine Alternator is being arranged from Hutbay for restoration of V.K. Pur exchange as commercial power supply at V.K. Pur is not available.
In Great Nicobar Island, at Campbell Bay, 256 line exchange has been installed and is working in the satellite building. In addition, three INMARSAT terminals have also been commissioned. In the case of Vijay Nagar and Gandhi Nagar exchanges they have been submerged. In Car Nicobar Island, the exchanges at Lapathy, Sawai, Kamorta, Champin and Terassa were completely submerged. In Car Nicobar, with the commissioning of second 2 Mb VSAT satellite equipment, mobile telephone service in the Island has been restored. Two INMARSAT terminals have already been commissioned.
At Katchal Island, one Multiple-Channel Per Carrier (MCPC) satellite equipment, exchange equipment, battery and power plant are being under installation. Three INMARSAT terminals have already been commissioned.
At Teressa Island, new exchange building has been finalised. The installation team along with the MCPC satellite and exchange equipment is expected to reach soon. Two INMARSAT terminals have already been commissioned.
