Specialized investigations by GSI
Geological Survey of India (GSI), a premier scientific organization in the country is relentlessly pursuing since 1851, the survey and exploration of minerals and raw materials for industrial growth in the country. Besides, it has taken up specialized geo-scientific investigations to ensure a safe community life free from the vagaries of the natural hazards. The organization has now successfully completed 153 years of glorious service to the nation. The highlights of its achievements during the year 2004 are as follows :
Ø GSI declared as the 'Nodal Agency' on Landslide Studies by the Government of India.
Ø Recommendation of GSI for immediate vacation of population made from the study of Varunavat Parbat Landslide, Uttarkashi district, Uttaranchal has saved the lives of local residents.
Ø GSI scientist participated in the day-to-day monitoring of the Parechu Lake created due to landslide and predicted lake parameters and the future probabilities of water discharge.
Ø 25 geo-environmental investigations were taken up comprising geo-environmental appraisal, geo-environmental impact assessment and studies on natural hazards and geomorphic processes covering public health and landslide issues in addition to 12 items of Syn-Exploration Baseline Data Generation.
Ø Study of Fluorosis endemicity was carried out in parts of Jhansi and Sonbhadra districts, U.P. and assessment of Arsenic incidence in Bhojpur district, Bihar.
Ø Detailed glaciological studies on Hamta Glacier, Lahaul and Spiti districts (H.P.) have been carried out to monitor the maximum and minimum ablation. In general the bare ice shows about 19 per cent higher ablation than the covered ice, both at lower and middle altitudes.
Ø Glacier inventory of Thatte, Saltoro, Sumdo, Fasten Nubra and Rangdo basins of Ladakh district of J&K, have identified 108 glaciers in Saltoro basin, 366 glaciers in Sumdo basin and 82 glaciers in Fasten basis. The total glacierised areas are 40.5 per cent, 14.02 per cent and 6.89 per cent in Saltoro, Fasten and Sumdo basins, respectively.
Ø All India earthquake database has been updated up to the year 2001 incorporating 1347 events. A total of 17483 events have been registered so far in the database within the territory covered by latitude 0-37 N and longitude 68 - 98 E.
Ø 43 items of Geotechnical and engineering geological studies through 207 investigations have been undertaken related to civil engineering projects for water resource management / development / creation of communication network, transport and other infrastructure facilities.
Ø A MoU signed with IMD for integration of seismological observatories in India under national seismological network and collaboration in the field of seismology and earthquake geology.
Ø Seismic microzonation studies carried out in Siliguri Town, West Bengal, Ahmedabad City, Gujarat, Mumbai area, Maharashtra, Dehradun urban complex of Uttranchal and Vizag of Andhra Pradesh.
