Shri Jagdish Tytler, Union Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs, (Independent Charge), today assured that a special cell will be created to pay attention for suggestions and proposals put forward by overseas Indians for rehabilitation work for the tsunami affected areas. The government will respond very quickly. For the Government the rescue, relief and rehabilitation work is a very serious matter. The group of Ministers established for this purpose have been taking all out efforts, the defense forces and the administrative machinery has responded with a sense of urgency, Shri Tytler said.
Shri Tytler made these concluding remarks in the Plenary Session on Disaster Management and the role of overseas Indians on the third day of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. Earlier, Dr. Sam Pitroda, Chairman, C-Sam, made a presentation on the disaster management effort. The panelist included Shri P.D.Bhatnagar, Convener and Secretary General of the Consortium of Indian Scientists, Shri S. Krishna Kumar, Union Secretary Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, representatives from the NGOs and international organizations.
Shri Tytler appealed the delegates participating in the Pravasi Bharatiya sammelan not to go back to their country with the impression that very little is being done for the tsunami affected in India. Our Press is independent and very highly critical and vigilant in its approach towards covering such events. Still it has praised the effort. The Indian response to the disaster in neighboring and other countries was also very quick and fast. But those working hard have mostly kept themselves away from the glaze of media, Shri Tytler said. He also mentioned that the tragedy has also taken its toll in 71 families of politicians in India including his own. He lauded the media for its positive role in the disaster and welcomed all suggestions of the participant delegates attending the session.
