South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a leading coal producer among the subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 on November 28, 1985. It was carved out of the mines of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) and Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). With Headquarters at Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, the Company started functioning independently from April 1st, 1986. It was bifurcated in April 1992 when Mahanadi Coalfields Limited was formed with mines located in Orissa.

The company covers Korba, Kusmunda, Gevra, Raigarh, Bhatgaon, Bisrampur, Baikunthpur, Chirimiri and Hasdeo (partially) areas in Chhattisgarh and Sohagpur, Jamuna-Kotma and Johila areas in Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the largest coal producing companies in India and operates through 12 administrative areas.

SECL has geological coal reserves of 44.18 billion tonnes as on March 31st, 2004 and mining right over 956.41 sq. kms. with all right over 259.85 sq. kms. It has 97 mines, out of which 57 are in Chhattisgarh and 40 in Madhya Pradesh. It has 76 underground mines, 19 open cast mines and 2 mixed mines.
