The Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources has decided to supply 15,000 Solar Lanterns worth around Rs.5 crore for the Tsunami affected areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The decision was taken on the personal initiative of Shri Vilas Muttemwar, and and Minister for non-Conventional Energy Sources who deputed a team of four senior officers of the Ministry to the affected areas. The requirement of lanterns is based on the local assessment made by the team. Solar Lanterns would be very effective in providing mobile lighting in areas where the infrastructure for electricity supply is yet to be restored.
