route dispersal guidelines for airlines to stay

Wednesday, January 12, 2005

The Civil Aviation Ministry has clarified that the route dispersal guidelines for airlines flying in the domestic sectors will continue as before. This comes in the wake of newspaper reports suggesting that these guidelines are being done away with.

All airlines, private or public, have a well-defined route dispersal policy so that all areas in the country including remote areas like the North-East, the Andamans and regions of Jammu & Kashmir are well connected. The objective of the route dispersal guidelines is to provide intra-connectivity and the ministry has asserted that there is no question of doing away with this policy. It is not only for Indian Airlines to fulfill social sector commitments, but the private carriers in this sector also have to follow the same policy.

In fact decision of the Cabinet to allow only those private carriers with five years of experience to fly overseas, is formed on the basis that the more an airline flies within the country, the greater the reward to operate overseas flights.

The Ministry has stressed that intra-connectivity is paramount.
