Indian Railways transported 438.26 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue earning freight, a record all time high loading, during the nine months of the current fiscal year ending December, 2004, exceeding the target of 428.19 MTs for the period by 10.07 MTs. This was 31.11 MTs higher over the loading of 407.15 MTs during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Target for the full year 2004-2005 is 580 MTs.

The excellent performance of freight traffic is indicative of buoyancy in the core sector of the national economy.

During December, 2004, a total of 53.56 MTs of revenue freight was carried, exceeding the target of 50.98 MTs by 2.58 MTs. This was higher by 4.68 MTs compared to 48.88 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year.
